Football Predictions Pro

Excel Football Predictions Pro allows to easily access football (soccer) results, standings, statistics, and make predictions of upcoming games. This post shows how it works and highlights its key features. A free version can be downloaded following the link at the end of this article. The free version only supports one league: Spain Primera Division (La Liga). A full version supporting 20 European leagues and having additional features is also available. You can also access a web version of Excel Football Predictions Pro called XGoals.

Football scores database

Excel Football Predictions Pro will automatically update the data when started, if it has not been updated for more than a week. The source database is usually updated on Monday or Tuesday. The data is stored in a hidden sheet and includes football league, season, match date and time, home team, away team, half time goals, full time goals, yellow and red cards. The free version downloads data for Spain Primera Division (La Liga) since 2010.

Scores for a given season can be seen in the results tab. Similarly, standings and statistics for a given season can be seen in the respective sheets (see more about that later). The data includes fixtures for the current season too, which are shown in the predictions tab for the selected period. The period spans from the current day to the number of selected following days (up to a maximum of 28) that can be changed with the arrows next to the number of days.

Predictions

Excel Football Predictions Pro always starts on the Predictions tab, which can be considered as the main window. It is only in this tab where a different football league can be selected and loaded (not applicable to the free version). It loads upcoming games for the current season and shows predictions as per user settings. The Refresh button reloads upcoming games and calculates predictions again.

Football predictions are calculated based on different user settings and can show quite different figures depending on the selected parameters:

1. Data settings

Users can select the number of previous seasons to be considered in the model, as well as whether to include the current season or not. We recommend to include the last 2 or 3 seasons, along with the current season. However, in some scenarios, for example in the mid or end of current season, we might want to consider the current and previous seasons, or even just the current season. For more on this please read the following post: Football predictions overview

2. Model parameters

Users can choose the method to calculate probabilities among the following three options:

  • Simple probability calculations are explained in this post (Football predictions overview). This will affect the calculations of win/draw/lose probabilities, while score probabilities will still follow Poisson (see next)
  • Poisson distribution model is probably the most common approach to football predictions. It is explained in this other post (Football predictions using Poisson distribution).
  • Modified distribution is a modified Poisson model with additional parameters that might be considered for some scenarios.

Users can also choose the input to the Poisson model among the following three possibilities (explained in this other post: Football predictions using Poisson distribution):

  • Goals weighted average
  • Team attach/defense strength
  • Combined goal expectancy

3. 1X2 pick settings

Users can select the win and lose cut for outcome (1X2) suggested picks. The default value is 0.5 for both win and lose cut. However, users can adjust it based on experience and in order to fit their betting approach.

Predictions made with Excel Football Predictions Pro include the following:

  • Win/draw/lose probabilities and odds
  • 1X2 outcome pick suggestion based on probabilities
  • Over/under goals and BTTS odds
  • Home and away goals, and score line probabilities
  • Yellow/red cards probabilities (not in free version)

All of those are full-time predictions. Additionally, the full version of Excel Football Predictions Pro shows half-time predictions too.

Statistics

Excel Football Predictions Pro allows to get team statistics for a given season. The season can be changed using either the drop-down or the Change Season button. Similarly, teams can be selected using either the drop-down or the dialog box upon mouse right-click. The dashboard allows to select two teams in order to see respective stats side by side.

Team stats include the following:

  • Form and points per game (PPG) playing home, away, and overall
  • Number of games played, and number and percentage of wins, draws, loses, goals scored and against, playing home, away, and overall
  • All games played and scores for that team (both home and away) in that particular season

Standings

The sheet Standings of Excel Football Predictions Pro shows the team’s position table for a given season. The season can either be changed using the drop-down or the Change Season button. The table shows the number of games played, wins, draws, loses, goals scored and against, when playing home, away, and goals difference, league points, points per game, and position ranking overall.

Results

The results tab shows the full list of games played for a given season. It includes the date and time of each game, home team, away team, half-time goals, full-time goals, and home and away yellow/red cards.

Excel Football Predictions Pro has a web version using the exact same data base and predictions engine, and is now live on internet as XGoals.
